Zeta Uroplakin Antibody. Zeta’s recombinant mouse antibody recognizes Uroplakin I, a member of the transmembrane 4 superfamily, also known as the tetraspanin family. Uroplakin I and the other members are cell-surface proteins that are characterized by the presence of four hydrophobic domains. Uroplakin I has two isoforms (Ia and Ib) mediates signal transduction events that play a role in the regulation of cell development, activation, growth and motility. Uroplakin is found in the asymmetrical unit membrane (AUM) where it can complex with other transmembrane 4 superfamily proteins. Uroplakin I may play a role in normal bladder epithelial physiology, possibly in regulating membrane permeability of superficial umbrella cells or in stabilizing the apical membrane through AUM/cytoskeletal interactions. Uroplakin I may also play a role in tumor suppression.
Uroplakin 1A is relevant for stabilizing and strengthening urothelial cells and helps to prevent them from rupturing. Uroplakin 1A staining predominated at the cell membranes and staining intensity was often moderate to strong. In thyroidal neoplasms the staining was mostly purely cytoplasmic and of low to moderate intensity. Uroplakin 1A immunohistochemistry is a potentially useful and specific marker for the distinction of urotherlia carcinomas from other neoplasms, although its sensitivity is less than 50 % in muscle-invasive cancers because Uroplakin 1A expression decreases during grade and stage progression.
