Zeta Mucin-5AC Antibody. Zeta’s recombinant mouse antibody recognizes MUC-5AC (Mucin-5AC), a glycoprotein family member of secreted gel-forming mucins that is expressed in several cancer types. MUC-5AC is a glycoprotein with multiple cysteine-rich domains in both N- and C-terminal regions that are responsible for the formation of polymers, a critical feature for gel forming. The mucin layer protects the epithelial surfaces from chemical and mechanical damage as well as microbial pathogens, which are bound and subsequently removed by the mucociliary system. There is growing evidence that MUC-5AC expression in cancer cells may actively contribute to tumor aggressiveness.
Mucins are high molecular eight glycoproteins with 80% carbohydrate contents and the remaining 20% is constituted by protein core. Gastric mucin M1 antigens are detected/found in columnar mucus cells of surface gastric epithelium and in goblet cells of the fetal and precancerous colon but not in those of normal colon. Evidence from the literature suggests that they are associated with the peptide core of mucins Resurgence of gastric mucin reactivity during colonic carcinogenesis is suggested to be due to either reexpression of the peptide core of gastric (or fetal colonic) mucins in the adult colon or due to changes in the glycosylation pattern of mucin which expose the hidden M1 antigens.
Studies have shown that MUC-5AC is also expressed in several cancer types suggesting a potential utility for the distinction of tumor types and subtypes. Aberrant MUC-5AC expression has been found in intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasia and pancreatic cancers, suggesting that MUC-5AC can aid in assuring the diagnosis of pancreatic carcinomas, classifications of gastric polyps and Barrett metaplasia, or as a diagnostic tool in the dermapathology.
