    KP1 Mouse Monoclonal

Zeta CD68 Antibody.  Zeta’s recombinant mouse antibody recognizes CD68, a glycoprotein important for identifying macrophages across broad human tissues.  CD68 is a lysosomal associated transmembrane 110kDa glycoprotein that is present in a variety of normal and neoplastic cell types and is primarily used as a marker to identify histiocytes and histiocytic tumors.  As a result, CD68 primarily localizes to lysosomes and endosomes, and to a lesser extent, on the cell surface.  Typically, macrophage CD68 is upregulated in response to inflammatory stimuli and can bind apoptotic cells, phosphatidylserine and oxidized low density lipoprotein.

The CD68 antibody is important for identifying macrophages in tissue sections.  CD68 is expressed in macrophages in a wide variety of human tissues, including Kupffer cells and macrophages in the red pulp of the spleen, in lamina propria of the gut, in lung alveoli, and in bone marrow.  The CD68 antibody reacts with myeloid precursors and peripheral blood granulocytes.  CD68 is also expressed in plasmacytoid T cells, which are thought to be of monocyte/macrophage origin. The CD68 antibody shows strong granular cytoplasmic staining of chronic and acute myeloid leukemia and also reacts with rare cases of true histiocytic neoplasia.  Lymphomas are negative for CD68 or show few granules.
